Conditional Discharge for Former NY Police Department Lieutenant Jennara Cobb

Former NYPD police lieutenant, Jennara Cobb, who retained Michael Shapiro, co-chair of the Carter Ledyard white collar defense practice, to represent her for sentencing and appeal following her October conviction for unlawfully divulging a wiretap, received a conditional discharge and community service from Justice Martin Marcus in Bronx Supreme Court at sentencing on December 18, 2015. Mr. Shapiro, assisted by associate Melissa J. Erwin, successfully advocated against the District Attorney’s request that the court impose a jail sentence. In a statement to the media gathered in the courthouse, Mr. Shapiro noted that the District Attorney had presented “woefully inadequate” evidence attempting to prove that Ms. Cobb had known about the existence of the wiretap placed to catch cops fixing traffic tickets, and he will ask the Appellate Division to set aside the conviction and dismiss the charges.
