NEW YORK, NY (July 22, 2013) – Carter Ledyard & Milburn LLP (www.clm.com) is pleased to announce that John M. (Jack) Griem, Jr. has joined the firm as partner in its intellectual property department effective July 22, 2013. Mr. Griem’s practice concentrates on intellectual property litigation, particularly patent litigation, as well as license and technology agreements, strategic portfolio development, and intellectual property issues arising in corporate and finance transactions. He also advises clients on trademark matters, including litigation seeking preliminary injunctions, U.S. Patent and Trademark office opposition proceedings, and prosecution to obtain federal registration. He joins Carter Ledyard from the New York office of Loeb & Loeb LLP, where he was a partner in its Patent Litigation and Counseling Department.
“We welcome Jack to our intellectual property practice,” said Tom Davis, chair of the intellectual property department and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. “He will add depth to our already strong team.”
Having led major patent litigation in the fields of pharmaceuticals, diagnostic testing, medical products, consumer electronic products and semi-conductors, among others, Mr. Griem has counseled clients on each phase of a patent infringement case and its attendant antitrust issues, from pre-suit investigation to fact and expert discovery, summary judgment motions, trial and appeal. One particular area of expertise is advising clients in complex patent litigations under the Hatch-Waxman Act against generic applicants, winning multiple judgments of validity and infringement at trial affirmed on appeal. Additionally, he has also litigated cases seeking to recover damages for the at-risk launch of a generic ANDA product.
Mr. Griem received his law degree from Hofstra University in 1994, with honors, where he was Associate Editor of the Hofstra Law Review. He received his A.B. in Chemistry and Psychology from Dartmouth College in 1991. He is admitted to practice law in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
In the Spring 2014 semester, Mr. Griem will serve as an Adjunct Professor and teach "Biotechnology and the Law" at his alma mater, the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University.
“Joining Carter Ledyard’s intellectual property practice was a natural choice,” said Mr. Griem. “The firm’s strong reputation, deep pool of talent, and diversity of matters handled within the firm’s intellectual property practice makes this move particularly fitting for me and my clients.”
