Jeremy Steckel counsels not-for-profit organizations on corporate and compliance matters, including formation, obtaining and maintaining tax-exempt status, corporate governance, board fiduciary duties, charitable solicitation, international grantmaking, excess benefit transactions, self-dealing, relationships with other not-for-profit and for-profit entities, commercial contracts, structural changes, asset sales and dissolutions. His clients include public charities, private foundations, religious organizations, advocacy organizations and trade associations. He is also a member of the firm’s Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Group, which advises clients on developing, strengthening, testing, and enforcing their information protection policies and procedures.
From 2014-2016, Mr. Steckel was a Senior Fellow and Supervising Attorney for a law clinic at NYU School of Law, where he supervised teams of law students representing nonprofits and for-profit social enterprises in corporate matters. His work included advising an NYU affiliate on establishing the first charitable bail fund serving indigent defendants in Manhattan.
From 2008-2013, Mr. Steckel was a capital markets associate at Milbank LLP, where he represented investment banks, governments and corporations in domestic and international securities transactions. He regularly worked on bond offerings issued or guaranteed by governmental entities such as Canada’s Department of Finance and the U.S. Export-Import Bank.
