CL&M Mourns the Passing of its Client Dr. Agnes Varis

Our client Dr. Agnes Varis, 81, died on July 29 from cancer.  During her professional career, she founded generic drug companies Agvar, Marsam Pharmaceuticals and Aegis Pharmaceuticals.  She wanted to make generic drugs available to all, and to that end helped draft the Hatch-Waxman Act of 1984 and a bill which was eventually passed as part of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003.  Dr. Varis was an energetic philanthropist who championed diverse causes including jazz education, the Metropolitan Opera, and women’s causes.  Despite her request that there be no obituaries, she was eulogized on the floor of the Senate on Monday, August 1, by three different Senators.
