Stephen L. Kass Addresses International Congress on the Environment in Colombia

Stephen L. Kass delivered a series of talks, in both English and Spanish, at the Fourth International Congress on the Environment sponsored by Colombia’s Centro de Estudios para el Desarrollo Sostenible in Bogotá on September 26 and 27. The theme of this year’s conference was the protection of tropical rainforests. Steve described the long-running litigation between residents of Ecuador’s Amazon region and Chevron, as summarized in his recent article in the New York Law Journal. Steve also spoke to a group of Colombian university representatives about the use of environmental impact assessments in adapting to climate change and participated in a panel with U.N. and Colombian environmental leaders on prospects for next June’s U.N. conference on “Rio plus 20,” at which the nations of the world are to assess progress in combatting deforestation, climate change and other environmental challenges since the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
