Our retired partner Joe Ryan passed away on Saturday, June 15th at the age of 82. Born in Baltimore, Joe received his B.S. from Hofstra University and his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1962. Joe was a fierce lacrosse player in high school and college. He took these competitive instincts from the lacrosse field to the legal field, starting his legal career as an associate at Dewey Ballantine, working for a time at Winthrop Stimpson, acting as General Counsel for Cushman & Wakefield, then becoming a partner at Paskus Gordon & Mandel before joining Carter Ledyard as a partner in 1987, where he chaired our real estate condemnation practice for over 20 years until his retirement in 2010. Joe represented the City of New York and several New York State agencies, including the Dormitory Authority, the Empire State Development Corporation and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, assisting them in their efforts to facilitate economic development, develop subway and rail infrastructure, and develop facilities for the CUNY system in the New York Metropolitan Area. Joe was a skilled and tenacious lawyer, a good colleague and a friend. We mourn his passing.
