Carter Ledyard Client Wrongfully Terminated by the New York Philharmonic Wins Reinstatement

April 17, 2020/less than a minute

Carter Ledyard client Liang Wang, the New York Philharmonic’s first oboe since 2006 and one of the world’s most highly regarded classical musicians, won reinstatement after being fired in 2018 based on allegations of purported “misconduct.” Liang, who was represented by Carter Ledyard’s Alan S. Lewis, partner and co-chair of the firm’s White Collar Defense Practice, and Judith A. Lockhart, partner and chair of the firm’s Employment Practice, was found by independent arbitrator Richard Bloch to have been terminated without just cause, warranting not only reinstatement, but also restoration of all of Mr. Wang’s back pay going back to the date of his wrongful termination. At the conclusion of the 20-day arbitration hearing, which took place over the course of eight months, Arbitrator Bloch found that the Philharmonic had failed to prove any misconduct by Liang. Liang looks forward to playing with the Philharmonic, as soon as it resumes its schedule.
