Carter Ledyard litigation partner Mitchell C. Shapiro presented at the Food Marketing Institute 2016 Legal Conference in Chicago on June 20, 2016. He sat on the “Data Breach Preparedness Panel” with Mary Moorkamp, Schnuck Markets, Inc.’s Chief Legal & External Affairs Officer and attorney Chris Cwalina. Mr. Shapiro spoke about Recent Legal Developments regarding data breaches, including the proposed replacement for the recently invalidated US-EU Safe Harbor directive of 2000, the ongoing debate over the Data Security Act of 2015, inconsistent enforcement activities by individual EU Member countries and individual States and the antitrust lawsuits against the credit/debit card associations over the EMV chip card standards and rules. This was a return engagement for Mr. Shapiro, who presented a similar topic to the FMI conference in 2009.
