Carter Ledyard Mourns the Passing of Alum and Founding Environmental Practice Group Member Jean M. McCarroll

January 16, 2024/less than a minute

Jean M. McCarroll, former Carter Ledyard counsel and founding co-director of the firm’s Environmental Practice Group in 1994, passed away last week at the age of 85. Jean received her A.B. from Radcliffe College in 1960 and J.D. in 1979 from New York University School of Law. She was a partner at Berle, Kass and Case prior to joining Carter Ledyard. Jean’s Environmental practice spanned several decades, and included important litigation, environmental impact assessment and disclosure, land-use planning and development, regulation of hazardous and toxic substances and wastes, corporate compliance, and environmental audits. Jean also co-authored a New York Law Journal column on environmental law for nearly 15 years while at Carter Ledyard.

Former Carter Ledyard partner and EPG co-founder Steve Kass said, “Jean was an outstanding litigator, mentor to younger litigators, the reliable quality control for most of us in the EPG, an outstanding role model for lawyers generally, and kind, modest and uniformly respectful of others in her dealings with her many friends and colleagues at CLM.”
