Careers
Carter Ledyard & Milburn LLP is a firm of approximately 80 lawyers located at 28 Liberty Street in downtown Manhattan. Founded in 1854, the firm is one of the oldest in the United States and has a broad general practice in the corporate, securities, trusts and estates, litigation, tax, real estate, intellectual property, nonprofit organizations, and environmental fields with a diverse and international clientele. Substantial portions of the firm’s workload comes from overseas-based clients, including those from Canada, Israel, China, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and their U.S. affiliates, financial institutions and other financial services providers, governmental entities and media and technology clients.
When recruiting for associate positions, the firm seeks to limit its interviewing to candidates who are sincerely interested in the firm on the basis of its practice, size and other attributes, and for our targeted recruitment efforts, who have the requisite skills and experience to meet our needs. Academic achievement at law school is important, but not dispositive. Outstanding undergraduate academic records, personal skills, extracurricular activities and a good sense of humor are all considered in the assessment of candidates. Please note that we are not currently offering a summer associate program. Recruiting for entry level or lateral associate positions is being conducted on an “as needed” basis.
Each lawyer is expected to assume considerable responsibility early in his or her career; responsibilities increase as rapidly as the lawyer demonstrates an ability to handle them. Staffing of matters normally involves small working groups with associates reporting directly to the partner in charge of the matter. Associates are also encouraged to participate in various public service projects. The firm considers such activities to be part of the regular duties of associates and treats them with the same care and priority as all other matters in the firm.
We were among the first firms who signed the Statement of Goals of New York Law Firms and Corporate Legal Departments for Increasing Minority Hiring, Retention and Promotion sponsored by the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. One of our partners previously served as Chair on the Association’s Committee on Recruitment and Retention of Lawyers, which sponsors a summer clerkship Fellowship Program for minority first-year students from New York metropolitan area law schools.
Carter Ledyard is an Equal Opportunity Employer. It is our policy, from recruitment through employment and promotion, to provide equal opportunity at all times without regard to age, race, creed, color, national origin, gender, disability, marital status or sexual orientation.

For first-year associates, the firm will reimburse for bar related expenses up to $5,000 and for reasonable out-of-town moving expenses.
